A column of common questions about basement plumbing in the Maryland and DC suburbs

Maryland Basement Questions

About this column

A plain-spoken column on basement plumbing in the Maryland and DC suburbs, built on official and maker sources with every source linked.

What the column is

Maryland Basement Questions answers one homeowner question per page about the plumbing that lives below the first floor: sump pumps, floor drains, sewer backups, basement bathrooms, frozen pipes, water heaters, and the permits and paperwork around them. It covers the suburbs of Maryland and DC, where the rules change depending on which side of a county line you're on.

Where the questions come from

The questions are composites. They're the ones homeowners in this region ask over and over, written the way people tend to ask them. They are not letters from named readers, and nobody on this site is a made-up correspondent.

How the answers are researched

Every answer starts with the people who set or publish the rules: WSSC Water, county permit offices, the State of Maryland, the EPA, CDC and FEMA, the model plumbing code, and the installation manuals from the companies that make the equipment. Those sources are linked on each page, both in the text where a claim is made and in a list at the bottom.

Each page shows a date. When it says "Sources checked", that means the answer was checked against its sources on that date, not just that a comma was moved. If a source changed, the answer changes with it. If something couldn't be confirmed, the page says so rather than guessing.

The column's editors aren't named on the pages. The answers stand on their sources, which you can open and read for yourself.

What it won't do

Some jobs are dangerous enough that a how-to doesn't belong here. The column won't walk you through gas work or electrical work, such as wiring a pump circuit or relighting a flooded heater. Where a job calls for a licensed plumber or electrician, the answer says so plainly.

The column also doesn't refer you to contractors, rank companies, or publish reviews. It explains how to check a licence and what questions to ask, and leaves the choosing to you.

Who's behind it

The people who publish this site also run businesses in the plumbing and water treatment trade. That relationship, and how it shows up on these pages, is set out on who runs this site.
